Services

CanineTech Rehab is a referring practice for veterinary clinics in the Kitchener-Waterloo Region providing physical rehabilitation services for canines that have injuries, pain, joint dysfunction, are post-surgical or have degenerative diseases such as arthritis. Our clients return to their referring veterinarian for general care. We provide assessment findings to the referring veterinarian, and if required, progress notes and a discharge report. Canine Rehab

Canine Rehab is based on the same principles as physiotherapy for humans. Physiotherapy is a health care profession which helps to restore, maintain and maximize strength, function, movement and overall well-being through examination, evaluation, diagnosis and physical intervention. Your canine rehab therapist will provide an individualized program for your dog. The treatment may consist of hands-on manual therapy, pain relieving modalities (laser, heat/cold packs, acupuncture), specific exercises and education.

Virtual Rehabilitation

Virtual canine rehab sessions are a one-on-one secure web-based meeting with you, your dog and a canine rehab therapist. Meeting virtually allows the therapist to see and assess your dog’s movement patterns, as well as identify the source of their issue. Your therapist can prescribe and demonstrate exercises for your dog’s specific condition. In a virtual appointment the canine rehab therapist is able to observe you and your dog doing exercises and correct them if needed. During these sessions you will be able to ask questions and receive professional advice.

Laser

Laser Phototherapy or Low-Level Laser Therapy is a cold laser treatment. It is a form of phototherapy involving the application of monochromatic and coherent light to injuries or lesions to help stimulate the healing process. It is used to increase the speed, quality, and tensile strength of tissue repair, decrease inflammation, and provide pain relief. It can be used to treat many common disorders, acute or chronic, or used as acupuncture point stimulation. Laser therapy can be used to treat muscle, tendon, ligament, connective tissue, bone and skin tissue.

Acupuncture

At CanineTech Rehab, we use Western medical acupuncture, which is a modality involving the insertion of fine needles that is based on traditional Chinese acupuncture. The needles are inserted at specific points in the dog’s body and do not contain any drugs. They stimulate the natural release of the body’s pain killers and anti-inflammatories and promote healing. Acupuncture is mainly used to treat musculoskeletal pain, myofascial trigger point pain, nerve pain, swelling and post-operative pain.

Acupuncture needles are solid, stainless steel, sterile one time use needles. The needles are very fine and flexible and do not have a cutting edge like a hypodermic needle allowing it to slide smoothly through the skin and underlying tissue without trauma.
